SUMMER 2018: The bakersfield campaign



For a year, we had been hosting local book drives and collecting general donations. The Bakersfield campaign was our first large-scale effort.

We would like to give our sincerest gratitude to everyone who contributed to this wonderful project; whether you donated 1 book or 300, your support directly translated into a step toward educational equality.



PRELIMINARY RESEARCH



We spent hours to select a local community where our help would mean the most. After countless emails, phone calls, and recommendations, we finally chose the city of Bakersfield, CA. We got in contact with the leadership of the main branch library and set up a connection.



SOLICITING DONATIONS



We collected donations over a four-week period. Every Saturday afternoon, we printed hundreds of flyers and walked around Bay Area neighborhoods slipping them into mailboxes. After distributing the flyers, we went back to the areas we had visited the last week and collected the book donations which people had placed on their driveways or porches.



GOING TO BAKERSFIELD



Annie and Sophie represented Book Bank at Bakersfield. On July 25th, 2018, they loaded a pickup truck with 2,000 books and traveled for four hours to reach Bakersfield at noon.



CERTIFICATES FROM THE MAYOR



The office of Karen Goh, the mayor of Bakersfield, presented Annie and Sophie with special achievement certificates.

Annie and Sophie drove to the Beale Memorial Library, the main branch of the Kern County Library system and also the only one that opens on the weekends. There, they met up with the regional supervisor and unloaded the books to a back room. The librarians were extremely gracious and kind, and gave Annie and Sophie a tour of the library.



MOVING FORWARD
